While in the tunnels, the trains are on Automatic Train Control (ATC) and thus the operators technically don’t need to see down the length of the tunnel and the lighting is primarily for egress purposes. That being said, better illumination to reveal any safety issues is desirable, as well as to deter vandalism. As a secondary consideration, the overhead 600V DC power cables are checked for fraying on a nightly basis, and while the maintenance vehicles have onboard lighting, it’s helpful that the tunnel interiors be illuminated well enough to reveal any potential maintenance issues.
